Message from the President - Sept 2008

Dear Omaha Sports Club members:

It is almost impossible to comprehend that three years have passed since I first took office as Omaha Sports Club President. I am indebted to several people who have helped me throughout these years. My thanks go to all of the wonderful board members; as a group, we made some very solid positive changes and witnessed significant growth in the Club’s membership. Financially, the Club remains fiscally sound.

The Club’s website has proven to be an important resource for our members. Thanks to the efforts of our webmaster, we have been able to make an electronic version of the Sportscaster available to members. Many members, in fact, have appreciated the ability to use the website to find out important information about Club activities. Because of the website’s value, however, the Club needs help developing it further and offering more resources to members, and I hope those of you with website development skills will contact our webmaster and offer to help.

I am very fortunate to have been a member of this fine Club and to have met so many wonderful people as a result. For that reason, I would like to encourage you to attend this year’s Annual Affair and, while there, to cast your vote for the new executive board members, who will keep the Club running smoothly. We have many fine candidates to choose from. In addition to voting, there will be free food and beverages (leaded and non-leaded) for a couple of hours, and then there will be a very short meeting during which we will announce the Man and Woman of the Year as well as the new executive board.  After the meeting, we will cut loose with to the sounds of Omaha’s best band, “Rough Cut.” And did I mention the Annual Affair is free for all members? I hope you can make it to this celebration.

Finally, I would like to thank you all for allowing me to serve you these past 3 years. Most importantly, though, I would like to thank my wonderful wife Carol who has been by my side these many years, giving me the encouragement and Love I will forever be thankful for.

Respectfully,
Joe Martinez

Volleyball-summer wrap-up & getting ready for fall

First, I would like to congratulate the first and second place summer coed volleyball winners for each league, whose pictures are featured on this and the next page.

Second, I want to give a great big “Thank you” to each of the league managers for this past session: Jennifer Kolbeck (A League), Stacy Morton (BB League), Denise Hamilton (B League), and Rob Smith (B1 League). Each did a fantastic job keeping the leagues on track. Because of their efforts, everyone seemed to have a great time.

FALL SESSION: all of the information you will need, including tryout dates and times, can be found on the OSC website, at http://www.omahasportsclub.com/volleyball.htm.  If you have any other questions, please feel free to call me at (402) 359-1055 or write me at volleyball@omahasportsclub.com.

I know I have asked this many times, but I must once again request that one or more of you volunteer to run our leagues. This year will be my third serving as volleyball chairperson, and I so need a replacement. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Golf/ End Of Season Banquet Sept 17th, and summer scramble results

Our golf leagues are nearing the end, though some leagues have been rained out 2, 3, or 4 times and are racing to get finished before the snow falls… I mean before the golf banquet. The last night for the Elmwood league is September 5th, no matter what. I think it overlaps with the first night of bowling. And just so you know: the Golf Banquet is on Wednesday Night, September 17th, at the Bel Air Banquet Hall, 12101 West Center Road (actually 122nd & Gold). Cocktails at 6:30, dinner at 7:00 p.m. RSVP sign-up sheets will be at your last night of league play. The banquet is free to all league golfers; subs and guests pay $20 at the door.

In May, we played at Red Oak CC and what a treat! The Omaha Sports Club has played at Red Oak for 10 years straight and always in August, when the course is dry, but playing in May provided a different, a greener course. I showed up extra early, hit the driving range, and the putting green (something I rarely get to do). Although my team members got lost looking for the golf course, they finally showed up—and early enough to cart up and drive to our starting hole. We enjoyed the best luncheon of the year (so far). Some dart players even showed up (Mark Kiihne's team) to show what they were made of. On a scale of 1–10 (10 being the highest), I rate our Red Oak CC visit an 8.5… See results below:

First flight
1st Place: Randy Smith, Marnie Heider, Jerry Boeckman & Joyce     Stoural  (65);
2nd Place: Larry Welch, Marian Wascher, Pat & Lorin Galvin (66);
3rd Place: Steve Heinz, Jerry Hartman, Spencer Jacobs & Tim “I need a ride home” Halligan (69).
Second flight
1st Place: Brad & Candi Coe, Larry Tjaden & Dee Bigge (70);
2nd Place: Dave Francis, Jeff Kurtz, Karen Obermeier & Sue          Moskovits (70);

(Very close!)…

2nd Place: Dave Koebel, Deb Bylund, Tim & Rita White (74);
3rd Place: Dawn Bailey, Carol Weidner, John Carlson & Don        Schroeppel (76).
Flag winners: Pin Flag winners were not recorded.

In June, we made a trip to Oakland GC and once again I must say, what a treat! The course was in great condition (the morning after the Omaha hurricane). On our drive north we saw lots of storm damage and even a Dodge County Trooper. My team was late again (this time, I was with them). The pro did a great job getting everyone organized… We arrived with time to spare with almost four dozen doughnuts thanks to Jack Umbaugh. Our luncheon at Oakland GC was just as good at Red Oak CC (or better). I think the homemade mashed potatoes scored well with the crowd. I rated our Oakland GC visit an 8.5… See results below:

First flight
1st Place: Loren & Pat Galvin, Larry Welch & Marian Wascher (67);
2nd Place: Randy Smith, Marnie Heider, Jerry Boeckman & Joyce     Stoural (69);
3rd Place: Dean Ross, Nancy Wordekemper, Kris Chelf & Joan      Eckerson (70).

2nd Place: Brad & Candi Coe, Larry Tjaden & Dee Bigge (71);
3rd Place: Jack Umbaugh, Tim White, Jimmy Graves & Gene Hug (71).
All 71s, for a scorecard playoff!
Third flight
1st Place: Karen Obermeier, Lois Dorn, Bob Swatek & Doug Wendt (73);
2nd Place: Spencer Jacobs, Jerry Hartman, Randy Volquardsen & Al Siebert (73);
